Lecture Hall Complex, Indian Institute of Technology (IIT)

Hyderabad, Telangana, India

The lecture hall complex is an architectural marvel featuring 15 auditoria, accommodating between 60 and 800 students. Spanning a 300-acre site, it occupies a strategic location at the intersection of the campus’s two primary pedestrian routes. Designed as the heart of student activity, the design merges functionality with aesthetics, fostering both academic engagement and social interaction.

A central two-level pedestrian street runs through the building, flanked by classrooms and auditoria on either side. This open layout enhances accessibility and facilitates seamless movement for over 3,000 students daily, without relying on mechanical systems. A series of ramps and staircases adds fluidity, transforming movement into a sensory experience where light, space, and people converge. Skylights punctuate the roof, bathing the interiors in natural light and creating an interplay of brightness and shadow that enlivens the space. The building is naturally ventilated, offering a sustainable, comfortable environment year-round.

The design is defined by sweeping curved reinforced concrete shear walls that rise organically from the ground, embracing the lecture halls and unifying the structure. These flowing forms, coupled with open, naturally lit spaces, create a harmonious balance between bold architectural expression and functional innovation, making the complex a hub of learning and interaction.
